Steroids are used for a lot of different things other than to help jocks get a bigger body. There are some steroids in some asthma medications because they help the lungs become stronger so you can breath easier.
Steroids are a proven treatment for arthritis too. They work by decreasing the swelling and slowing the immune system. Inflammation can work against your body causing the swelling. The steroids reduce the production of the immflamatory substances to slow down the damage to the cells.
The benefits of the steroids are that when the inflammation is getting so bad that it becomes a threat to the body’s organs, the steroids can save the internal organs from destruction. When you get a huge amount of pain from the arthritis the steroids quickly minimize the pain and on a long term treatment can stop the pain altogether.
Steroids can be taken in forms of medications, in pills, powders or injections. In the case of arthritis the injection may be the fastest way to eliminate the pain quicker. The pills, if taken on a daily basis will also help the severe pain from coming about. The injections would probably be given only once a week. You may want something on a daily basis.
Steroids are not a sure treatment either. There are some people that it would be a bad idea to get the injections. This would be people who have or are taking blood thinners; you can bleed at the location of the injection. You may not want to get the injections to often because it can weaken the skin and joints in the spot you are getting the injections.
Other side effects of steroids injections are infection, allergic reactions, bleeding into the joints, some skin discoloration and weakening of the bones. These side effects do not affect everyone, you may be one of those people that it would work great for but it may not be worth trying for. Ask your doctor if the steroid treatment is right for you.
