A lot of doctors will inform a patient that it is ok to take an over the counter medication for their arthritis. The over the counter remedies have fewer side effects than the big name drugs that could be prescribed. They are safer for the user and because it is over the counter the user may feel more at ease using it. They are called narcotic pain relievers, not narcotic as in cocaine or heroine but as in the word drug.
But sometimes the doctor will prescribe medicines that are a bit stronger and are not generally sold as over the counter. These narcotics are Tylenol with codeine. This drug is also given to women after childbirth and after oral surgery. It is a very strong pain reliever and if you are not carefully you could become dependant.
Other narcotics a doctor may prescribe would be Vicodin, this one you have to be careful of. Vicodin is very strong and can easily become addicting. Morphine is another one that is super strong and would work great for people with severe arthritis. Percocet is an equally strong medication and given to women in the hospital after childbirth.
These medications may help the arthritis but they are known to be addicting and habit forming, so check with your doctor and decide which cause of remedy is the best for you.
